After Dr. Lauren Storts her DDS degree, she completed a General Practice Residency. During this residency, she learned more about orthodontics and sedation dentistry. Today, she is a member of the American Orthodontic Society.
What Happens at My First Dental Visit?
Your first dental visit is an important step in keeping your mouth healthy. During this visit, the dentist and dental hygienist will do several things to check your teeth and gums, make sure everything is in good shape, and give you a fresh, clean smile.
Dental Screening
The visit usually begins with a dental screening. This is when the dentist examines your teeth, gums, and the rest of your mouth. They will look for any signs of cavities, gum disease, or other issues.
The dentist may also ask you questions about your dental habits, like how often you brush and floss, and if you have any pain or problems with your teeth. If this is your first time seeing this dentist, they may ask about your medical history to make sure you get the best care.
Digital X-rays
After the screening, the dentist will likely take digital X-rays. X-rays help the dentist see parts of your teeth and jaw that aren’t visible during the screening, such as below the gum line. They can show hidden cavities, bone loss, or issues with how your teeth are growing or moving. Digital X-rays are safe and use very low levels of radiation. The process is quick, and the images help the dentist plan the best treatment for your dental needs.
Dental Cleaning
The dental cleaning is the next step, and this is usually done by a dental hygienist. The cleaning starts with removing plaque and tartar, which are sticky layers of bacteria that can build up on your teeth. The hygienist uses special tools to scrape away this buildup, especially in hard-to-reach places like between your teeth and along your gum line.
After the plaque and tartar are gone, the hygienist will polish your teeth with a special paste to make them smooth and shiny. They may also floss between your teeth to ensure everything is clean.
What Happens Next?
Once the cleaning is done, the dentist will go over the results of your screening and X-rays. They will let you know if any follow-up treatments are needed, such as fillings for cavities or a deep cleaning for your gums. The dentist will also give you advice on how to improve your brushing and flossing habits at home.
Your first dental visit helps set the stage for good oral health, so you should go regularly and follow the dentist’s recommendations. We recommend visits every six months.
Your Child’s First Dental Visit
Your child’s first dental visit is a little different from an adult’s. This first visit focuses on making them feel comfortable with the dentist and teaching good dental habits. The dentist will check your child’s teeth and gums to make sure they are growing the right way and will talk about how to brush and care for their teeth. They might also count your child’s teeth and explain what will happen as they get older.
We will still take dental X-rays to keep track of your child’s tooth development. X-rays help us see things that aren’t visible during a regular exam, such as how adult teeth are coming in or if there are any issues below the gum line. By taking X-rays, we can catch problems early, like overcrowding, cavities between teeth, or misalignment. Regular X-rays are a key part of making sure your child’s smile stays healthy as they grow.
Our friendly team also provides comfortable dental cleanings. This involves brushing and polishing the teeth to remove any plaque and keep them healthy. The dentist may also apply fluoride to help protect their teeth from cavities.
To help your child feel comfortable, the dentist might explain everything they are doing in a fun, easy-to-understand way. They may let your child sit in the chair and see the dental tools before the exam starts.
